Mixed media and collage workshop
This workshop is about memories, a journey through creativity and introspection, designed to explore the rich collection of our past experiences that define who we are today. Over the course of six sessions, participants will delve into the realm of mixed media artistry, blending various materials and techniques to create expressive artwork that capture the essence of their memories. This course enables you to generate ideas to produce arts through the infusing emotion and narrative into the artwork.
Artist instructor: Reem Masri
Reem Masri was born in Jerusalem in 1991. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from Al-Quds University, Palestine, in 2014. She obtained her MA degree in Contemporary art from ENSA Bourges, France (2018). She worked as an Instructor at the Faculty of Art, Music, and Design, at Birzeit University, Palestine.
She participated in a number of exhibitions, including: “How do we create the image of an imagined place” at Al Mustuda in Ramallah (2022), “And we still follow its path” at Al-Hoash Art Court, Jerusalem (2021), “New creatives” at Al-Mamal Foundation for Contemporary Art, Jerusalem (2021), “Ramallah Art Fair” at Zawyeh Gallery (2021), “The Gift’ exhibition at Al-Mamal Foundation for Contemporary Art (2021), “Art Now” at Gallery One, Ramallah (2021), the Group Exhibition “L’Horizon des Énénements” at la Box, Bourges, France (2018) and “The Last Exhibition” at the French-German Cultural Center, Ramallah (2017).

Workshop Outline:
Session 1: Introduction to Mixed Media and Memory Exploration
- Introduction to the fundamentals of mixed media art and collage techniques.
- Engage in icebreaker activities and discussions to explore the significance of memories in their lives.
- Through guided exercises, participants will begin to dig in personal memories and identify key themes or emotions they wish to explore in their artwork.
Session 2: Gathering Materials and Inspiration
- This session will focus on sourcing materials for collage-making, both conventional and unconventional.
- Participants will embark on a creative scavenger hunt, gathering items that evoke memories or resonate with their chosen themes.
- Group discussions and sharing will encourage participants to draw inspiration from each other's stories and experiences.
Session 3: Exploring Techniques and Composition
- Building upon the skills acquired in previous sessions, participants will learn advanced collage techniques such as layering, texturing, and image transfer.
- Through hands-on demonstrations and experimentation, they will explore different ways to arrange and compose their collages to convey the depth and complexity of their memories in an artistic manner.
Session 4: Embracing Emotion and Narrative
- This session will focus on infusing emotion and narrative into the artwork.
- Participants will engage in reflective writing exercises to articulate the stories behind their memories and translate them into visual narratives.
- Guided by prompts and feedback, they will refine their compositions to convey the desired mood and message.
Session 5: Mixed Media Fusion and Experimentation
- In this session, participants will push the boundaries of traditional collage-making by incorporating additional mixed media elements such as painting, drawing, or found objects and materials i.e. Oil pastil, coloued pencil, paper mache, and charcoal.
- They will experiment with different combinations of materials and techniques to add depth, texture, and meaning to their artworks.
- Group critiques and peer feedback will foster a supportive environment for creative exploration and innovation.
Session 6: Reflection and Celebration
- Completion and last touches to the artworks produced.
- The final session will be dedicated to reflection, sharing, and celebration of the participants' artistic journeys.
- Each participant will have the opportunity to showcase their finished collages and share the stories behind them.
- Ended by group discussions to explore the transformative power of art in processing and preserving memories, fostering connections, and inspiring personal growth.
