Over six immersive sessions, you'll dive deep into the streets and neighborhoods of Ramallah city, learning to capture the energy and essence of city life with a focus on the old city of Ramallah using the timeless medium of ink.

From mastering the fundamentals of perspective drawing to infusing ink in your sketches with depth, texture, and atmosphere, our workshop offers a comprehensive exploration of urban ink sketching techniques. Guided by VAF’s artist instructors, you'll develop your skills in capturing architectural details, and infusing your artwork with personality and flair.

Artist instructor: Yazan Abu Salameh

Yazan Abu Salamah was born in 1993 in Jerusalem. He studied Fine Arts at Dar Al-Kalima College in Bethlehem in 2011 and participated in several workshops including scenography at Al Quds College in Beit Jala. Abu Salameh’s artworks reflect the courage of a young artists in terms of the use and distribution of materials on the surface of his artworks. He uses a mixture of concrete, pebbles, wires mixed with Lego blocks and drawings. His concrete artworks can be seen as miniature maps that reflect remnants of childhood memories, present concrete blockades and watch tours as well as Palestinian neighborhoods from a bird’s eye view.

Yazan Abu Salameh participated in two group exhibitions at the Walled Off Hotel Gallery: the 2nd organized in 2018 and the 4th organized in 2019. He won a third prize in the competition “Let’s make it glow” which allowed him to exhibit in Italy in a group exhibition held in cooperation with Turin Municipality in 2019. Most recently he participated in Ramallah Art Fair at Zawyeh Gallery in 2020.

Workshop Outline:

Session 1: Introduction to Urban Sketching with Ink

  • Overview: Introduction to urban sketching as a form of artistic expression and an overview of ink sketching materials e.g. black ink, pens, sizes, paper.
  • Activities:
  • Basic exercises to get comfortable with handling ink tools and loosen hand movement.
  • Introduction to contour drawing and line weight.

Session 2: Understanding Perspective in Urban Sketching

  • Overview: A deep dive into perspective drawing principles for urban scenes, exploring one-point and two-point perspective.
  • Activities:
  • Guided exercises to practice drawing simple geometric forms in perspective.
  • Sketching simple urban scenes focusing on perspective lines and vanishing points.
  • Analysis of perspective in photographs and real-life urban environments.

Session 3: Capturing Architectural Details

  • Overview: Techniques for capturing architectural details in ink sketches, focusing on lines, shapes, and textures of buildings and structures.

 

  • Activities:
  • Sketching architectural elements such as windows, doors, facades, and rooftops.
  • Exploring different ink techniques to depict textures like brick, concrete, and glass.

Session 4: Adding Depth and Atmosphere

  • Overview: learning shading techniques to create depth through contrast and value in urban scenes.

 

  • Activities:
  • Understand light sources and shading with ink techniques.
  • Practice ink sketching urban scenes with emphasis on light and shadow.
  • Experiment with cross and dot shading.

Session 5: Composition and Urban Sketching Strategies

  • Overview: Exploring composition principles for urban sketches, and ways for selecting viewpoints and framing scenes.

 

  • Activities:
  • Discussing composition techniques such as focal points, leading lines, and framing.
  • Sketching urban scenes from different perspectives, focusing on composition.

Session 6: Final Project and Critique

  • Overview:
  • Completion of a final urban sketch project incorporating all learned techniques.
  • Group critique and feedback session to review final artworks.

 

  • Activities:
  • Working on a more elaborate urban sketch project, from personal photographs or on-site observation.
  • Sharing final sketches with the group, discussing challenges, successes, and areas for improvement.

Material: From the participant

  • A 4 Sketchbook, Canson or anything similar in quality.
  • A set of fine liner black ink drawing pens with different tip sizes; including: (0.1mm, 0.3mm, 0.5mm)
  • Pencils: HB, B, B, 4B, 6B, 8B
  • Eraser and sharpener
